Solis Park School Site Council and English Language Advisory Committee - Parents Needed!

Dear Parents of Solis Park,

Are you looking for ways to be involved in the Solis Park School community? Being a part of the Solis Park School Site Council and/or the ELAC committee are excellent opportunities to participate in worthwhile statewide educational programs. The following information may be helpful in deciding whether you want to be involved in SSC and/or ELAC or if you’d like to nominate another person for one of these committees.

WHAT IS SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL?
The Council is an elected body composed of parents, staff members, and the school principal. For additional details about the composition of a SSC, click here. As this is our inaugural year, we need to elect five parent members. We will need two members to serve a one-year term, and three members to serve a two-year term.

The major function of the School Site Council is to monitor the instructional improvement programs at a school site by assisting in the development of the SPSA (School Plan for Student Achievement), to liaison with the community regarding school improvement and programs, and to provide input on the LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan)and on the expenditure of LCFF (Local Control Funding Formula) monies.

WHAT IS ELAC?
ELAC stands for English Learner Advisory Committee. All schools with 21 or more English Language Learners are required to establish an English Language Advisory Committee. Any parent from the school may be nominated and elected to serve and we strongly encourage parents of English Learners to join the ELAC committee. This committee also helps to develop the SPSA (School Plan for Student Achievement), specific to the needs of English Language Learners. The committee will advise the Principal and staff on the implications of the language census for translation requirements and will support efforts to make parents aware of the importance of regular school attendance.

WHAT ARE THE LCAP GOALS?
Both the School Site Council and the ELAC Committee work to support the Irvine Unified LCAP (Local Control and Accountability Plan) goals. The goals are:

  • LCAP Goal #1: Ensure all students attain proficiency in the current content standards.
  • LCAP Goal #2: Ensure access to rigorous and relevant learning tools, resources, and skills for all staff and students.
  • LCAP Goal #3: Cultivate a positive school culture and system of supports for student personal and academic growth.
  • LCAP Goal #4: Communicate effectively and form strategic alliances to secure the support and resources

WHAT ARE THE NOMINATION AND ELECTION PROCEDURES?
Parents may choose to nominate themselves or nominate another parent for one or both committees. If you are interested in nominating someone, you must first get their permission. Use the form linked here for your nominations. Nominees should submit a paragraph by Friday, August 26, 2022 via email at heatherphillips@iusd.org stating their reason for participating. This paragraph will be used on the ballot which will be published for school community voting. If you’d like to see some sample bios from another school district, click here.

Elections will take place at the beginning of September for the 2022-23 school year.

We encourage all those interested to self nominate! We value your input and look forward to partnering with you. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
